Video Diary of an RHS Show Garden

I have been looking forward to this project for months since first getting the call to cover the construction of the Gabriel Ash Greenhouse RHS Show Garden.  The garden has been designed by Lilly Gomm and is being constructed by Urban Landscapes.  The garden, sponsored by Gabriel Ash, are also supplying one of their RHS endorsed cedar greenhouses as the main focal point to the garden.

I have had the privilege to be behind the scenes at all of the major RHS shows including Chelsea and Hampton Court.  During this time I have been able to watch how the team at the BBC construct their programmes and observe their filming techniques, then I avidly watch the results of the broadcasted shows on the TV.  I am always in awe of the scale of their operation, the manpower and number of takes involved to capture the show gardens for our enjoyment.  In stark contrast I will be there on my own doing all the producing, directing, script writing, filming and sound recording. Should be easy then!

With a background in garden design and landscaping projects, coupled with my experience in managing and promoting trade stands at all of the RHS shows I am in a familiar environment. This helps with the scripting and the form filling before any filming can even begin.  For the video I wanted to capture how the build goes together in order to give people an insight into the level these designers go to in order to create these wonderful spaces.

During the filming I was also tasked with taking some images of the garden to use in the promotional flyer. This needs to be printed over a week before the garden has even been finished.  This proved tough because the garden was no where near finished and only limited plants were on site.  This coupled with all the high viz jackets with numerous people on site proved a nightmare but I did manage to get a few uncluttered shots.
