The Making of a Chelsea Garden

A photographic and film documentation project by Mark Spencer

The gardens at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show that visitors see are viewed for just a few moments — but behind every finished garden is months of craftsmanship, problem-solving, artistry and collaboration that often remain unseen.

Over the past months, I’ve been documenting the making of the CPRE – ‘On the Edge’ garden designed by Sarah Eberle sponsored by Project Giving Back, following its journey from early ideas and workshops through to construction and installation at Chelsea.

Rather than simply photographing the finished garden, this project explores the materials, people and processes that shape a Chelsea garden long before the gates to the show open.

From quarry stone sourced in the Peak District…
to sculptors’ workshops filled with dust and timber shavings…
to hidden steelwork, planting decisions and the quiet moments before installation…

This is the story behind the garden.

About the Project

The project combines photography and film to create a longer-form visual archive of the garden’s journey — capturing not only the finished space, but also the makers, artisans and landscapes connected to it.

Featured throughout the story are:

  • workshop and build photography

  • behind-the-scenes film footage

  • details and textures often missed by visitors

  • the relationship between landscape, craft and storytelling

  • the transition from concept to show garden

A longer-form publication exploring the complete journey is currently in development.
